Have you ever wondered why twitter took off in the way it did? You probably do and the reason is because of celebs posting about their day and what they have been up to and people like to know what their favourite celebs are doing.

If no celebrity ever took to Twitter it wouldn't of grown in the way it has, but they did, so it has and here we are.

Now Twitter is a mass marketing tool. Say you had about 20,000 followers, then if you posted a tweet to your website encouraging your followers to click the link then you can direct anything up to 400 clicks for this link and the more followers you have then the more chance you have of directing traffick to your website.

How do you get followers if you are just a normal citizen and not a lucky bastard like most of these celebs? You can gain followers in a number of ways.

You can use TweetAdder which has been voted the #1 twitter marketing tool and it is 80% automated, You type in either specific keywords or location and a radius and TweetAdder will pull up a list of what you have requested, then you can hit the follow button and let the software do the rest. Set a time of about 1 week for the people who don't follow you back and then just hit the unfollow button.

Using this tool you can generate a lot of followers in time, You could gain anything up to 300+ follows per day i use this tool and it is effective.

The other way to gain followers is to try and set up a new twitter account with maybe something up and coming like an event or something. I recently secured the Twitter name of @L0NDON2012, obviously this on its own will not bring followers to the account you will have to interact with what your twitter name is i.e with the above mentioned I am not going to be directing traffick to my site straight away I will just be posting about the games in the hope I can attract followers then next year I will see how it goes.

In the early days of twitter someone set up the Twitter name of @CNN and just posted updates from that news channel. When Twitter took off, The official CNN company wanted that Twitter name but in the TOS of Twitter you cannot buy or sell Twitter names as they are free so what happened?

CNN denied having to buy the Twitter name but instead say they've employed the person responsible and traded the name for this job, could be true but I doubt it, they payed him off and good luck to him.
